Η Daphne the Apollonius (Laurus nobilis) is an evergreen fragrant shrub. It is also known as vagia, laurel, laurel and leaflet. It comes from areas of the Mediterranean and in Greece is found as native. In ancient times Daphne was considered a sacred plant, dedicated to the god Apollo.
Plant description
Its leaves are lanceolate with a small stem and dark green color. They have a strong aroma and their taste is a little bitter. Flowering occurs in March to April. The fruit is an oval-shaped hole and black in color when ripe. Laurel oil is produced from its fruits.
Plant care
Watering: It needs moderate watering, especially in the hot summer months, but also the first time until it settles in place.
Location: It needs sunny to semi-shady places. It withstands the very low temperatures of winter and the very high of summer.
Pruning: To renew its foliage, the dry shoots must be removed.
Plant uses
- Used as a spice in Mediterranean cuisine.
- Used in the packaging of nuts such as figs and raisins.
- Laurel oil is used to make insecticides and pesticides.
