Farfugium, with its large round leaves

Farfugium japonicum is a semi-evergreen plant that stands out for its large and striking leaves and is a great addition to gardens and outdoor spaces. Its origin is from Japan and belongs to the Asteraceae family. Its height as well as its width reaches 60 cm, it consists of numerous very large, round-kidney-shaped leaves with a diameter of 15 to 35 cm in dark green color. In autumn to winter it blooms, with yellow daisy-shaped flowers.

Position

Grows in moist, cool and shady or semi-shady locations. It can also be planted in permanently moist, rich, preferably clayey or loamy soils as well as in coastal or lakeside locations.

Watering

It needs regular watering, keeping the soil slightly moist, but avoiding excessive moisture.

Durability

When the temperature drops below -5°C, its above-ground part disappears, while the rhizome can survive at temperatures below -20°C.

Maintenance and care

After the end of winter it is good to remove its dead leaves.
