Royal Mount Athos

Common Name: Royal Mount Athos
Latin Name: Ocimum basilicum
Origin: Tropical regions of Asia and Africa

It is an annual plant, as it does not withstand frosts, it is shocked below 7 °C. Its height is 0,40 – 0,70 cm. Its leaves are large, light green in color and oval. Agioreitiko was found by Constantine the Great's mother, Helen, at the spot where the Holy Cross was buried. For this reason the Church uses basil in the holy water.

Flowers Its flowers are white and form an extreme spike, which should be cut to help the growth of the foliage. Blooms from spring to summer.

Location It grows satisfactorily in all types of soils, without particular problems. Prerequisite for the soil to be well drained. Prefers places with sun or moderate shade.

Durability It is resistant to cold and heat, as long as it is in a sunny position.

Watering It needs moderate amounts of watering, with limited to no watering in the winter and more regular watering in the warm periods of the year.

Pruning It is good that it is topped often so that it thickens below and does not germinate.

Lubrication It is good to strengthen it regularly from spring to the end of summer.

Diseases and enemies

It is quite a resistant plant and is not easily affected by diseases and insects. Care must be taken when watering, because the leaves of the plant should not get wet because it can be affected by mildew.

It is suitable for

  • planting in pots for balconies, terraces.
  • Cuisine. In salads and tomato sauces (pesto), it gives a beautiful aroma.
  • Repulsive. You think it repels mosquitoes and flies with its scent.
  • Therapeutically, its consumption helps the digestive system, while it is also a sedative.
