Chrysanthemum

Common Name: Chrysanthemum
Origin: Asia and Northeast Europe

Chrysanthemums, also known as chrysanthemums, are a genus of flowering plants belonging to the Asteraceae family. The height of the plant ranges from 25 – 125 cm, depending on the variety. Its vegetation is relatively dense and its root system rich.

Leaves

Its leaves are simple, torn, deep green in color and usually downy.

Flowers

Its flower stems are durable and have vertical growth. Chrysanthemum flowers are compound and form the heads. The diameter of the flower heads ranges from 5 – 10 cm, and their color can be white, red, pink, yellow and green. The chrysanthemum blooms towards the end of summer until after October. The duration of flowering depends mainly on the variety, climatic conditions and planting location.

Terrain

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. A necessary condition is that the soil has good drainage. It prefers sandy soils, rich in nutrients.

Position

Prefers sunny positions protected from strong or hot wind. In semi-shaded locations, the coloring of the foliage is affected.

Watering

Water the plant regularly when you see the surface of its soil dry and be careful to always empty the saucer of water so that its roots do not rot.

Lubrication

Fertilizing in the spring every 15 days will greatly help the vigor and flowering of the plant. Fertilize with a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants or slow-absorbing granular fertilizer.

Durability

It thrives in places with mild winters and can withstand cold and low temperatures up to - 2ο C. Caution is required with strong winds. Suitable for planting in areas with heavy air pollution. It withstands coastal areas.

Pruning

During flowering cut off the wilted flowers so that new flowers appear. When it finishes flowering, prune the plant just above the point where the central stem branches.

Diseases and enemies

It is very often attacked by aphids (beeflies), which develop large populations.

The leaves of the chrysanthemum are often infested with mildew, where a white surface forms on the leaves and then withers and falls off.
