Centuries-old Olives

Common Name: Olive
Origin: Eastern Mediterranean

It is an evergreen tree, with opposite, lanceolate, leathery leaves, dark green on the upper surface and silvery on the lower.

Flowers

Its flowers are white, single-petalled and very small, form a botryos inflorescence and appear towards the end of May.

Fruit

Its fruits, the olive, are spherical cones, brown in color and up to 4 cm in diameter. The fruit ripens and is harvested in late autumn and early winter.

Terrain

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. A necessary condition is that the soil has good drainage. It prefers sandy soils, rich in nutrients.

Position

Prefers sunny positions protected from strong or hot wind. In semi-shaded locations, the coloring of the foliage is affected.

Watering

It has moderate water requirements, except in the summer months when you can increase its watering. In winter we water about every 10 days. In summer 3 to 4 times a week. In spring and autumn 1 to 2 times a week.

Lubrication

Apply the fertilizer in spring and summer (once a month). You can use either a complete, granular fertilizer by spreading it on the soil between the plants and then watering well, or by dissolving a water-soluble fertilizer in the watering can.

Durability

It thrives in places with mild winters and can withstand cold and low temperatures up to - 18ο C. Caution needed in strong winds. It is suitable for planting in areas with intense atmospheric pollution. Withstands coastal areas. Spring frosts are a major problem for the olive tree, which can damage the developing buds.

Pruning

the olive as a decorative plant can even be pruned very severely, in order to keep its shape in the form we desire. Its ability to sprout quickly and in proportionally large quantities of shoots allows us to shape it according to the needs of the space to be installed. A good time for this kind of work is in late winter, right after the fruits fall.

Diseases and enemies

The enemies that the olive can encounter in our garden most often cause limited damage, especially if treated immediately. Insect-based infestations are mainly those caused by daco, nucleus accumbens and cotton.

In fungal diseases we find cyclone, tobacco and adromycosis more often, while we should not forget to mention the bacterium that causes cancer (large woody tumors).

It is suitable for
