The climbing rose is a fast and vertical growing deciduous shrub. Its leaves are compound, consisting of ovoid, lanceolate, toothed leaflets. It has thorns on its trunk and branches.

Flowers

Its flowers are small, single or double and grow in inflorescences. Its flowering lasts from April to November.

Location

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soils, without particular problems. Prerequisite for the soil to be well drained. Prefers places with sun or moderate shade. In sunny places it grows better and produces more flowers.

Durability

Withstands cold and low temperatures down to -5 ° C. You need to be careful with strong winds. Suitable for planting in areas with heavy air pollution. It withstands coastal areas.

Watering

The rose needs moist and cool soil to grow and give abundant flowering. Therefore, it is good to water it often with as much water as is necessary to keep the soil moist to a sufficient depth.

Pruning

It is a work that is done once a year, in the winter after the big frosts and generally before the start of the new vegetation, that is, in January for the southern and warm areas and in February for the coldest ones.

Lubrication

The rose is a plant that needs regular fertilization. In order to achieve lasting and rich flowering, it is good to strengthen it regularly from spring to the end of summer.

Diseases and enemies

The rose is a plant with frequent occurrence of diseases. Her main diseases are:

  • Black spot, shows characteristic black spots up to 1,5 cm in diameter that develop on the upper surface of the leaves.
  • Powdery mildew, affects the leaves, flowers and stems. It appears as a white powder on the leaves.
  • Aphids feed on the natural juices they suck from the young vegetation. They grow mainly under the calyx of the flower and on the petals.
  • Caterpillars attack both leaves and flowers, leaving holes of irregular shape.
