Telegraph

Common Name: Telegraph
Origin: Coasts of the Gulf of Mexico

The telegraph is a plant that with its impressive color does not go unnoticed. It is a tropical, evergreen, perennial, climbing plant. It is distinguished by elongated, pointed leaves of red or purple color.

Flowers

It presents abundant and prolonged flowering from the beginning of spring until the end of autumn forming small flowers of white, pink or purple color which have three petals and resemble the shape of a small heart.

Terrain

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. A necessary condition is that the soil has good drainage. It prefers sandy soils, rich in nutrients.

Position

The telegraph does not need much light and grows best in semi-shaded positions in our garden and balcony. A partial shade spot with 2-3 hours of direct sun will give it a lovely deep color. Most of the hours of sun lighten the color of the leaves slightly.

Watering

It has moderate water requirements, with the exception of the summer months when you can increase its watering. In the summer 3 to 4 times a week. In spring and autumn 1 to 2 times a week.

Lubrication

Apply the fertilizer in spring and summer (once a month). You can use either a complete, granular fertilizer by spreading it on the soil between the plants and then watering well, or by dissolving a water-soluble fertilizer in the watering can.

Durability

The telegraph needs protection from strong winds as its branches can easily break. We also need to protect it in the winter so it doesn't freeze by covering it with some nylon.

Pruning

We can prune the telegraph in the summer after the end of its flowering so that it can re-sprout and give a second flowering in the fall but also become even denser. This will keep it thick and healthy for a long time.

Diseases and enemies

It is a resistant plant that is not easily affected by diseases and insects.

It is suitable for

      • For planting in the garden as a plant cover and to spread,
      • to be planted in pots on the balcony,
      • as well as in hanging baskets.
