Cornflower is a fast-growing, climbing plant. It has dense, glossy, leathery, green foliage.
Flowers
The flowers are white, small and strongly scented. They look like jasmine but have a star shape. Many grow together in the axils of the leaves. Rhynchosperma blooms from May to June
Location
It needs warm and sunny places, protected from cold and strong wind. It can grow in partial shade, but most flowers appear in full sun. It can grow in various types of soil provided good drainage.
Durability
Although it thrives in warmer climates, it can withstand cold and frost. Nevertheless, in cold regions it must be planted in protected places, especially from strong winds.
Watering
It needs moderate amounts of watering, with limited to no watering in the winter and more regular watering in the warm periods of the year.
Pruning
It is done at the end of spring, after its flowering has been completed. We apply light shaping pruning to maintain its shape.
Lubrication
It is good to make regular fertilizations, so that it constantly gives us its beautiful flowering. We give it some complete fertilizer.
- If it is planted in the ground it will need two doses, one in the spring and one in the fall.
- If it is in a pot, we use a water-soluble (powder or liquid) complete fertilizer, every 2-3 weeks from March to June and from September to November.
Diseases and enemies
Its most frequent enemies are the meligra, which creates honeydew secretions on the leaves of the plant. This results in many ants on our plant. The second enemy is coccoids, which attack the shoots of the plant.
