Peach tree

Common Name: Peach tree
Latin Name: Prunus
Origin: China

The peach tree is a medium-sized tree, 4 – 8 m tall, fast growing with a round crown.

Leaves

Its leaves are simple, alternate, elongated, lanceolate with toothed edges. They have glands at their base that secrete a resin-like liquid that attracts small insects.

Flowers

Its flowers are white or pink, grow in the axils of the leaves and stems, and are produced before the leaves develop. Its flowering takes place in March.

Fruit

Its fruit, the well-known peach, is an eyelet, has a spherical or flat shape with a characteristic abdominal seam depending on the variety. Its bark is thin, yellow or white with fluff. The core, the stone is large with many grooves.

Terrain

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. It prefers well-drained, deep loamy soils, while saline soils are unsuitable for its growth and should therefore be irrigated with good quality water.

Position

It is planted in sunny positions and protected from strong winds. It grows in areas with a mild climate and high rainfall.

Watering

It has moderate watering requirements, especially in hot seasons. Young plants, until they settle in their place, need more frequent watering. When there is not enough moisture or a sufficient amount of rainfall then watering is needed because the tree is sensitive to drought.

Durability

Withstands cold and low temperatures up to -12°C. Be careful with strong winds.

Lubrication

Fertilization is considered essential for good production and is done mainly with nitrogen and potash fertilizers. It needs regular watering and the application of a rational oil treatment. Fertilization provides the plants with the necessary nutrients to be strong. It is sensitive to frost.

Pruning

Configuration pruning:

  • Cup, from the main trunk at a height of 60-80 cm, 3 main arms are formed with an inclination of 45 degrees from the trunk and at an equal distance from each other.
  • Palmette, the peach's crown is shaped so that it grows in a vertical plane and acquires a flattened shape.

Fruit pruning: The peach tree forms a large number of fruits every year, so it is necessary to remove the fruits so that there are no small and large fruits.

Enemies and Diseases

The main insects that attack the peach tree are the mealy aphid (meligra), the mealybug (scab) and the larvae of the small peach butterfly. Fungal diseases often attack the peach tree and cause rotting of the fruit and drying of the trees. Powdery mildew is manifested by the appearance of whitish spots in the form of powder, which later darken on the stems, leaves and fruits.
