Plumbago

Common Name: Plumbango
Origin: South Africa

Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata) you can also hear blue jasmine. But it's not jasmine. It is a semi-climbing, deciduous plant, meaning it does not produce long shoots to wrap around railings and pergolas. Its leaves are small, oval and light green.

Flowers

Its flowers are small, blue in color and grow in inflorescences. It has a long flowering period, which lasts all summer and quickly covers the surfaces it climbs. Its flowering begins in spring and can last until October.

Location

Plumbago loves the sun and its direct sunlight is necessary for many hours every day, even on the hottest days of summer. It can grow in various types of soil provided good drainage.

Durability

In winter, it needs protection from frost by covering it with a large sheet of plastic because it cannot withstand low temperatures.

Watering

It needs frequent watering, especially on hot summer days. In winter when the plant has no leaves or flowers, water once a week or less frequently if the weather is wet.

Pruning

It is strictly pruned towards the end of February. Pruning is needed during flowering to remove dried flowers and dry leaves, otherwise cutting the tops will "fill" your plant with flowers low down.

Lubrication

If planted in suitable soil, the fertilization requirements are low. It is enough to add granular fertilizer before spring and autumn to enhance its flowering.

Diseases and enemies

Its most frequent enemies are the meligra, which creates honeydew secretions on the leaves of the plant. This results in many ants on our plant. The second enemy is coccoids, which attack the shoots of the plant.
