Lilac

Common Name: Lilac
Origin: Balkan Peninsula

Lilac is a deciduous shrub, with a height reaching up to 5 meters and a diameter of 2-3 meters. The most common species in Greece is the common lilac (Syringa vulgaris), with the characteristic purple-fuchsia flowers.

Flowers

Its impressive and very fragrant flowers appear during April-May and have a special blue-purple color (there are also varieties with white flowers). Its flowering usually coincides with the Easter season.

Terrain

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. A necessary condition is that the soil has good drainage. It prefers sandy soils, rich in nutrients.

Position

Prefers sunny positions but can also tolerate partial shade. It also shows great resistance to high summer temperatures, as long as it has sufficient humidity.

Watering

It needs moderate watering about 2 times a week. But it needs larger amounts of water every 2-3 days mainly until it is installed in a garden or in periods of intense drought.

Lubrication

Fertilize with a complete granular preparation once in early spring and once in late autumn to maintain vigor and improve its growth.

Durability

It withstands the high temperatures of summer and the low temperatures of winter. It is a plant resistant to wind and air pollution.

Pruning

Early spring, after the last cold it needs pruning shaping. In autumn, dry and injured shoots need topping for maximum and dense foliage.

Diseases and enemies

Lilac does not face particular problems with enemies and diseases.

  • Creating contrasts and different levels in flower arrangements with flowering or coniferous plants.
  • Suitable for planting in pots.
  • Used in parks, squares and tree lines.
