Sorrel

Common Name: Sorrel
Origin: South America

Oxalis (Oxalis triangularis), also known as false clover, is a herbaceous, flowering plant that propagates by bulbs. In the winter it goes dormant and in the spring it sprouts again. Its maximum height can reach 50 cm.

Leaves

Its leaves are triangular with an intense purple color and look like butterflies. They open during the day and close at night.

Flowers

In the spring, long stems appear on which small, white or pink flowers grow. Its flowering lasts until autumn.

Terrain

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. A necessary condition is that the soil has good drainage. It prefers sandy soils, rich in nutrients.

Position

Prefers sunny places, as a succulent. In areas with warm climates it can be grown in partial shade. In semi-shady places its leaves have a more vivid green color.

Watering

It has moderate water requirements, with the exception of the summer months when you can increase its watering.

Lubrication

Apply the fertilizer in spring and summer (once a month). You can use either a complete, granular fertilizer by spreading it on the soil between the plants and then watering well, or by dissolving a water-soluble fertilizer in the watering can.

Durability

It thrives in places with mild winters and withstands cold and low temperatures down to 0ο C. It is drought tolerant and ideal for dry areas and non-irrigated gardens. It is suitable for planting in areas with intense atmospheric pollution. Withstands coastal areas.

Pruning

It is necessary to remove the dried and diseased shoots in early spring. We apply light shaping pruning to maintain its shape.

Diseases and enemies

Succulents are attacked by pests and diseases. Their most common enemies are aphids, coccoids, thrips, mites and snails, while they are also often attacked by fungi.

It is suitable for

      • for ground cover in gardens, sloping grounds, rock gardens.
