Ligoustro

Ligustrum is a genus of evergreen or deciduous shrubs, which can become small or medium-sized trees. It belongs to the oil family. The genus consists of about forty genera. Ligustras can reach a height of six meters or more, depending on the species. Their leaves are simple, oblong or oval and have opposite phyllotaxy. They bloom in spring and summer and their small white flowers form conical inflorescences. The flowers consist of four petals united in their basal half. The fruits are small waxy blue and black berries that remain on the plant in winter. The entire plant is toxic, including the fruit.

Ligustrum is a hardy ornamental plant and grows in all soil types. It grows in sunny and semi-shady places, while it can be planted in coastal places, as it withstands the water droplets of the sea. Ligustro is very resistant to very low winter temperatures. It has moderate needs for watering, although in the summer months we must definitely water it twice a week. Regarding fertilization, we apply a complete granular fertilizer, once in spring and once in autumn to help its good growth. The ligustro is pruned after the end of winter, although we carry out small pruning and pruning almost all year round to maintain its compact shape.
