Poplar (Populus sp.) is a fast-growing, deciduous tree with a silver-white trunk that reaches a maximum height of 50 meters. Poplar is used for the rapid reforestation of areas, mainly in riverside areas where it offers important ecological benefits such as reducing the harmful effect of floods.
Leaves
Its leaves are alternate, long-stalked, ovate to circular or circular-triangular to rhomboid, toothed, or sometimes lobed or smooth-lipped.
Flowers
It is a dioecious species. The male and female flowers form hanging yule inflorescences. Flowering occurs in March-April.
Terrain
It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. A necessary condition is that the soil has good drainage. Prefers sandy or clay soils, rich in nutrients.
Position
Prefers moderately shaded or sunny positions protected from strong or hot wind.
Watering
It does not have high water requirements, except in the summer months when you can increase its watering. Water every 3-4 days during the spring and summer months.
Lubrication
Fertilize with a complete granular preparation once in early spring and once in late autumn to maintain vigor and improve its growth.
Durability
It is an extremely resistant plant to strong winds, frost, coastal plantings and air pollution.
Pruning
It is necessary to remove the dried and diseased shoots in early spring. We apply light shaping pruning to maintain its shape and size.
