Lantana (Polyanthousa)

Origin: South Africa

Lantana is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub with relatively fast growth. Its ornamental value is based on its bushy formation, its beautiful flowers (inflorescences) and the long duration of the flowers staying on the branches. Lantana can reach a height of 1-1,5 meters. There are upright, semi-creeping and creeping varieties.

Leaves

Its leaves are opposite, with a rough mossy surface, jagged and have an unpleasant smell.

Flowers

The flowers of the plant grow in corymb inflorescences, they are small tubular, which are initially yellow, purple and then turn red and orange. There are several varieties with different flower colors (eg white). Flowers on lantana appear from early May to mid-November.

Fruit

Its fruits are black, small and poisonous.

Terrain

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. A necessary condition is that the soil has good drainage. It prefers sandy soils, rich in nutrients.

Position

Prefers sunny positions protected from strong or hot wind. In semi-shaded locations, the coloring of the foliage is affected.

Watering

Water the plant regularly when you see the surface of its soil dry and be careful to always empty the saucer of water so that its roots do not rot.

Lubrication

Fertilizing in the spring every 15 days will greatly help the vigor and flowering of the plant. Fertilize with a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants or slow-absorbing granular fertilizer.

Durability

It thrives in places with mild winters and can withstand cold and low temperatures up to - 2ο C. Caution is required with strong winds. Suitable for planting in areas with heavy air pollution. It withstands coastal areas.

Pruning

Try to remove dried flowers to help it produce new flowers faster.

Diseases and enemies

Lantana is generally disease resistant, but can very rarely be affected by aphids and cotton bollworms.
