Can

Common Name: Can
Latin Name: canna indica
Origin: Central and South America

Canna is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant that is cultivated for its flowers but also for its beautiful and rich foliage. The height of the plant ranges from 40cm to 2m.

Leaves

Its leaves have an oval shape and can reach 50 cm in length and up to 20 cm in width. They are light green or red in color, depending on the variety.

Flowers

Its flowering begins in late spring and lasts until autumn. Flower color can be white, pink, red, orange or yellow. There are also two-color varieties, with a combination of colors. Depending on the variety, the color of the foliage varies from green to brown, or bicolor.

Terrain

It prefers moist soils, but grows equally well in well-drained soils and soil that is either neutral or slightly acidic and rich in organic matter.

Position

Prefers sunny planting sites, protected from winds.

Watering

It needs moderate watering especially when planted in the ground.

Durability

It is a hardy plant.

Pruning

What you need to do is to cut off the flowers that have finished so that the plant has continuous flowering. In winter it is pruned low to the ground and grows again the following spring.

Enemies and Diseases

The problem, as with almost all bulbous plants, is soil fungal infestations, which cause rotting of the bulb and destruction of the plant. These fungi attack the bulbs, during periods where there is intense soil moisture, due to the prevailing conditions or due to excessive watering.
