Yucca (Glorious yucca) is an evergreen plant, a genus of perennial shrubs and trees. It bears rosettes of straight, long and hard lance-shaped leaves. It is an extremely resistant and undemanding plant with a special ornamental value. It comes from Mexico and its flower is the national flower of El Salvador known as "flor de izote".

Leaves

Its leaves are oblong, lance-shaped with a dark green color. They are very stiff and their length reaches 30–50 cm.

Flowers

Shows impressive flowering of white inflorescences 1-1 m high, appearing in late summer. The flowers are bell-shaped and the fruit is an elongated berry about 50 cm long.

Terrain

It grows favorably in all types of soil, as long as they have good drainage. It is resistant to salinity.

Position

Prefers sunny positions, but also thrives in semi-shade. A south- or east-facing spot protected from strong winds is ideal.

Watering

It has moderate water requirements and can withstand long periods without watering.

Pruning

No need for pruning. It is only necessary to remove dead or old leaves from the base of the plant.

Lubrication

Fertilize the plant once a month when it is in bloom, with a water-soluble fertilizer with trace elements, suitable for acidophilic plants. This type of fertilizer helps to maintain the pH of the soil at the right levels.

Enemies and Diseases

Yucca is generally a disease resistant plant. It is affected by fungal diseases in conditions of high humidity. Insect infestations occur rarely. Can be affected by ringworm and coccoid (scabies).
