The Shrimp or otherwise Veloperoni (Beloperone guttata / Justicia brandegeeana) is an evergreen shrub of the acanthaceae family. It comes from Mexico. It was named after the American botanist Townshend Stith Brandegee (1843–1925). Its final height reaches 1 meter, while its width is 60-90 cm. Its hanging leaves in tile color, yellow or red are really reminiscent of shrimp.

The leaves are oval with a light green color and towards the end of the stem the bracts of the leaves are colored in tile, yellow or red. Its flowers emerge from the bracts and are long, slender and white with brown spots that fall quickly. Its flowering starts from spring until the end of autumn. It is a hardy plant, as it withstands the cold of winter.

: Location: Grows well in all soils, prefers sandy or loamy soils with good drainage. It thrives in semi-shady to sunny places.

➢ Watering: Requires frequent watering from spring to autumn.

➢ Pruning: Need pruning at the end of winter / beginning of spring. If the branches are left unpruned, they will hang to the ground.

➢ Lubrication: Requires regular fertilization with fertilizer for flowering plants, especially during the flowering period.

➢ Multiplication: Propagated by division of roots or by cuttings in spring.

Diseases and enemies

The shrimp is often infested with aphids and nematodes. It is rarely affected by fungi, which cause root rot. Symptom is necrotic spots on its leaves. If the infestation is not treated quickly, the plant is in danger of being lost.
