Dwarf barber

Berberis (Berberis thunbergii) is a deciduous, spiny, globose and compact shrub with lateral growth. It comes from countries in Asia and Europe and is a native of Spain. It is a resistant plant with minimal requirements. It can reach 4 meters in height and 3 meters in width.

The leaves are small, with a dark green-red color, which turns deep red in autumn. Its shoots have large thorns. It blooms in spring and its flowering lasts about 20 days. Its flowers appear on shoots of the previous year, are small, yellow in color and appear in a botry inflorescence. The fruit of the barberry is a red spherical rail with a smooth surface.

: Location: The barberry prefers sunny planting locations to acquire the red color of the leaves. Withstands frost (up to -20ο C). It is also ideal for coastal plantings.

➢ Watering: It is drought resistant. Before each watering, first check the soil moisture and if it is dry, then water. Avoid leaving water on the pot plate.

➢ Pruning: It needs pruning to remove dry and weak branches and maintain shape and size. If the bush is very large and blooms only at the ends of the shoots, it needs a strict pruning in winter. The whole bush is pruned to about 30 cm, it does not bloom in the coming spring, but in the following years it has rich flowering again.
