The anthurium (Anthurium sp..) also known as "Devil's Tongue" is a tropical and perennial plant. It is the most widespread indoor flowering plant. It is an impressive plant because of its large colorful flowers.

Leaves

It has glossy, large and broad green leaves.

Flowers

Its flowers are heart-shaped and their color varies (red, pink and white). Its flowering period starts in spring and ends in summer and can be extended if the plant receives sufficient light.

Terrain

Their soil should be light, with a high content of peat and have good drainage.

Position

Prefers bright places with indirect light and high relative humidity. Avoid shady places because they cause yellowing of the leaves and delay its flowering

Watering

In winter it needs watering once a week and in summer about every 5 days. During the summer months it is good to spray the leaves with water to maintain moisture and avoid drying them.

Tip:

It is ideal to frequently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to clean them from dust. It also helps the plant to breathe better and show growth.

Pruning

No need for pruning. It is only necessary to remove dead or old leaves from the base of the plant.

Lubrication

It is fertilized once a month during the autumn and spring period. An ideal preparation is the water-soluble fertilizer for flowering plants.

Enemies and Diseases

The most common problems that occur are:

  • Its possible enemies are the meligra, the granules and the thrips. While excessive watering favors the appearance of fungi resulting in root rot and finally wilting of the plant.
  • The most common problem is the tanning of the leaves due to direct contact with sunlight.
  • The presence of yellow leaves is due to low temperatures and excessive watering.

Toxicity

Anthurium is a toxic plant for cats and dogs because it contains calcium oxalate crystals in its leaf tissues. If swallowed, it may cause a strong burning sensation and skin irritation.
