Alyssum

Common Name: Alyssum
Origin: Mediterranean

Το άλυσσο (Alyssum maritimum) is an annual, herbaceous spring flowering plant. It is a plant of low and lateral growth and this makes it ideal for a ground cover plant. Abroad they also call it "Carpet of snow". In our country, it is also called "honeygrass" because of its honey-like aroma. Its leaves are small, lance-shaped and jagged at the edges with a light green color.

Flowers

The flowers are thin, very small, in showy inflorescences and various colors: white, lilac or purple. Its flowering lasts from February to June.

Location

It thrives in sunny or semi-shady positions. It does not bloom in shady places. It thrives in various types of soil in fertile or poor, with little or medium moisture. It also grows in coastal areas as long as it has a place with plenty of light.

Watering

It has moderate water requirements and is drought tolerant. Before each watering check the moisture of the soil and if it is dry then water. Avoid standing water on the pot plate.

Pruning

No pruning needed.

Fertilizer

Fertilize your plants regularly using a water-soluble fertilizer for flowering plants or a granular fertilizer. Slow-release granular fertilizer is added to the soil during planting, following the dosing recommendations stated on the package.

Plants grown in pots and planters may need more frequent fertilization to look better. Apply the fertilizer during the spring and summer period (once a month). You can use either the granular fertilizer by spreading it on the ground between the plants and then watering well or by dissolving the water-soluble fertilizer in the watering can.
