The persimmon, otherwise known as "the food of the gods", is a fruit of tropical regions, mainly eastern and temperate ones. 20 species are found in the Greek flora. It is a long-lived tree or shrub and usually round at the top. The leaves are green, spherical, flattened in shape.
Terrain
It grows satisfactorily in all types of soil, without particular problems. It needs rich, deep, sandy clay and irrigated soils. A necessary condition is that the soil has good drainage.
Position
It is planted in sunny positions and protected from strong winds.
Watering
It has moderate watering requirements, especially in hot seasons. Young plants, until they settle in their place, need more frequent watering. When there is not enough moisture or a sufficient amount of rainfall then watering is needed because the tree is sensitive to drought.
Durability
Withstands cold and low temperatures up to -10°C. Be careful with strong winds.
Lubrication
Fertilization is done in early spring and summer. We use fertilizer rich in nitrogen and potassium.
Pruning
Configuration pruning: It is done in the winter after the fruits have been collected. We remove parts of the plant to create an opening inside the crown.
Fruit pruning: It is severe pruning that is done on old, diseased or neglected trees or on those that we want to drastically reduce their size.
Enemies and Diseases
Diseases affecting the lotus are few. The most common are cottonseed and pseudocotton.
The sending and delivery of trees is done ONLY within Prefecture of Thessaloniki.
