Lobelia, a spring flower!

Lobelia, Flowers, Summer, Garden

H Lobelia (Lobellia erinus) is a herbaceous, perennial plant of low growth. It comes from South Africa. Its maximum height reaches about 20-25 cm. It was named after the Flemish Botanist Matthias de Lobel, who was the first to separate plants into monocots and dicots.

Plant description

The leaves are small, ovate, with a serrated margin. The flowers are small, pedal and at the base they have small spots. Flowering begins in early spring and lasts until early summer.

Due to its rich flowering it is an ideal choice for:

  • planters, flower pots,
  • in clusters or in rows on lawns,
  • rock gardens.

Plant care

Location:

It grows satisfactorily in all types of soils, without particular problems. Prerequisite for the soil to be well drained and neutral pH. Prefers places with sun or moderate shade. In sunny places it grows better and produces more flowers.

Watering:

It needs moderate to frequent watering, taking care to dry the soil between waterings.

Lubrication:

To achieve high flowering production, fertilize your plants regularly using a water-soluble fertilizer. Apply the fertilizer in spring and summer (once a month). You can use either a complete, granular fertilizer by spreading it on the soil between the plants and then watering well, or by dissolving a water-soluble fertilizer in the watering can.

Pruning:

We need to remove the withered flowers to maintain their vitality and have a prolonged flowering.
