The ornamental tomato Solanum pseudocapsicum, also known as the Jerusalem Cherry, is a perennial plant. It belongs to the family Solanaceae and comes from Mexico and Central America. The same family includes other cultivated species such as peppers, tomatoes and eggplants.

Description of the plant

The solanum is an evergreen, upright shrub up to 40 cm tall. It has thin, pointed and dark green leaves. In summer it produces white star-shaped flowers. The fruits are small, round and in autumn they acquire red shades. Its fruits are kept in the plant for 6 months.

The Jerusalem cherry is grown as an indoor ornamental plant. In summer it is good to take it out on the balcony and in winter to put it inside the house.

Plant care

: Location: It grows satisfactorily in all types of soils, without particular problems. Prerequisite for the soil to be well drained. Prefers places with sun or moderate shade. In sunny places it grows better and produces more flowers.

➢ Watering: It does not have high water requirements, except in the summer months when you can increase its watering.

➢ Lubrication: It does not have high nutrient requirements. It is good to apply a slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring and late summer.

Pruning: Configuration pruning is recommended at the end of winter. Prune the shoots at 1/3 -1/2 of their length.

Caution!!! The solanum is a toxic plant for cats, dogs and birds because it contains the toxic substance strychnocapsin. If swallowed it causes heartburn, gastric irritation, fever and diarrhea.
