Let's get to know the bulbs!

What are bulbs?

Provided bulb we refer to the trunks, tubers, tuberous roots and rhizomes. All of these have the ability to create roots and buds from which leaves and flowers grow.

  • Bulb, is a miniature of a plant, essentially a short, disc-shaped underground shoot. It consists of fleshy leaves (scales or cloves or coats), which contain hoarding substances such as starch, sugars and proteins. Their base looks like a solid plate from which the fleshy leaves protrude upwards and the roots downwards. New bulbs form between the bases of the leaves.
  • Trunk, its description is the same as the bulb. The difference is the compact mass instead of the base disk, which grows more sideways than in height. New trunks are formed at the top of the old trunk.
  • Tubers, are short, swollen, underground shoots usually spherical or flattened that contain nutrients. In contrast to the bulbs and trunks, the tubers consist of a hard bark, which has roots at various points on its surface. There are also sprouting buds that give new growth.
  • Tuberous Roots, are swollen roots, which contain hoarding nutrients. They are fleshy roots, which have a fibrous root system through which they absorb moisture and nutrients for the growth and flowering of plants.
  • Rhizomes, are underground shoots that look like roots but have the characteristics of a bud with buds. They grow horizontally or below the soil surface. From the lower surface the roots emerge and on the upper surface there are the sprouting buds that give the new vegetation.

Small secrets for impressive bulbous plants

  • The bulbs are planted in sunny or semi-shaded places in the garden as the plants need enough sunshine to give us their rich flowering.
  • The depth of planting should be twice or three times the diameter of the bulb.
  • We avoid excessive watering of the bulbs, as there is a risk that they will not sprout and eventually rot.
  • Bulbous plants have abundant storage substances but need fertilization with a complete granular fertilizer, which contributes to their better growth and richer flowering.
