Description

Η nana cosmetic pomegranate (Punica granatum "Nana"), is a deciduous ornamental shrub with a height of 0,30-1 m. Its crown is spherical in shape, with dense branches. Its leaves are small, light green, shiny, oblong and make a beautiful contrast with its orange flowers, which appear from May to September. The fruits are small in size, usually appear in autumn and are maintained throughout the winter, even after the leaves have fallen. They gradually acquire a purple color over time and are very impressive.
It is cultivated for its fruits, from which the grenadine drink is prepared, but also for ornamental purposes.

Care

It is a plant that grows easily, without special care and care in all types of soil or in pots. It prefers sunny planting locations, but can also withstand partial shade.

Uses

  • It has an impressive appearance, when planted in rock gardens, planters, pots and flowering garden islands in all areas of Greece.
  • It is classified as a top species for low borders or clusters, due to its impressive and continuous flowering, combined with its dense vegetation and durability.
  • With proper pruning it can be formed into a small tree and is considered an ideal plant for bonsai.

Enemies and Diseases

The most common enemies of the pomegranate are aphids, which remove plant sap, mainly from the young shoots but also the leaves and flowers. They appear in Spring and Autumn. Pseudococcus, the vavakada, which infects shoots and leaves and weakens trees.

Pomegranate leaves are mainly affected by mildew and rust.
