We paint the eggs with materials that are in our house.

Every year on Holy Thursday we paint our eggs for the game of crackling on Easter Sunday. In many areas Holy Thursday is also called red Thursday because the most common color is red which has a double symbolism. On the one hand it symbolizes the blood of Christ at the Crucifixion and on the other the rebirth of nature and life.

Painting eggs can be done in two ways either by buying ready-made paints from the supermarket in our neighborhood or with materials that we use every day in our lives.

Natural colors

Depending on the color we want to achieve, we use the appropriate material from our kitchen.

  • For red eggs: beetroot or rose petals.
  • For brown - red eggs: the peels of red onions.
  • For orange: carrots or paprika.
  • For yellow eggs: cumin or turmeric or orange peel.
  • For green eggs: parsley or spinach or nettle leaves. Even olive leaves after you hit them first.
  • For blue-purple eggs: the purple cabbage.

We can also decorate our eggs either by wrapping them with threads or leaving leaf prints.

Execution Procedure

There are two ways. One way is to boil the eggs and leave them at room temperature to cool. Boil the material depending on the color and intensity we want to give our eggs to simmer for 30 minutes. Then strain the paint in a bowl, let it cool a bit and then put our eggs for about 30 minutes to get color. Finally, pour a little oil on a cloth and spread the eggs to polish them !!

The second way: In a pot we put the material of our choice according to the color we want to give to our eggs together with vinegar. Cover with water and let it boil for about 20 minutes. Red onion skins have been used in the example.

We lower the eye so that it calms down and the water does not boil.

Once the water has calmed down, put the eggs on top and boil them for 10 minutes.

Carefully remove the eggs and let them cool. Finally, pour a little oil on a cloth and spread the eggs to polish them !!

Good luck!

Happy Easter!! Happy Easter!!
