In Greece, the first to seek the import of potatoes was the governor Ioannis Kapodistrias. He himself had tried it during his travels in Europe and considered it to be an economic, basic and nutritious food for the Greek people of the post-revolutionary years.

So when he settled in Nafplio, he tried to give potatoes to the villagers, who despised them and threw them in the trash. Kapodistrias, however, knew very well the psychology and moods of his compatriots and fenced the warehouses where the potatoes were kept, as supposedly valuable items and set goals to keep them day and night. So, within a week, the potatoes were blown away and no one was left in the warehouse.
