What is it and in what forms does it exist?

Copper sulfate is a chemical compound of divalent copper, it is a copper sulfate and is characterized as anhydrous, in contrast to its hydrated form, which is better known as blue stone.

It is usually sold in agricultural stores in two forms: a) As pure copper sulphate, in blue-blue transparent crystals containing about 36% water. B) As snowy copper sulphate, in the form of flakes-blue powder prepared after dehydration of the crystals at 200-250 ° C. The powder is particularly preferred in agricultural applications due to its easier dissolution in water. The difference between this form and pure copper is the lack of 36% water.

Uses

Copper-bluestone sulfate has many applications in agriculture.

  • In agriculture it is used as a herbicide and bactericidal.
  • It is one of the most effective in the control of root and leaf fungi, with foliar spray and in appropriate dosage kills harmful insects, it is widely used in small vegetable seedlings.
  • In various crops as a fertilizer, soil enhancer e.g. of wheat before sowing and in the sprinkling of fruit trees and especially in viticulture.
  • In the production of various pesticides (such as bordigal pulp).
  • In the whitewashing of tree trunks to protect them from various infestations.

A tablespoon dissolved in 5 kg of water and watered at the root of plants for bacteria, fungi and soil insects (worms). Repeat every 1 week, for three times. Amounts above 60 mg / kg can be fatal to soil microorganisms. Also, large quantities can stop the composting of the organic matter. It is considered one of the best soil fungicides for the dryness of the sour, but also for infestations by monilia and phytophthora. It is applied in the winter months in the soil in an amount of 0,5-1 kg per tree depending on its age and it dissolves slowly with the rain water. In severe fungal infestations, a second application is needed during the summer months.

It does not have a systemic effect and this means that with a good wash we can consume the products without any fear and it is one of the few fungicides with this quality. Also, it is used in Organic Farming when used in a specific dosage!

But it has many other uses in different areas, such as:

  • In dyeing fabrics.
  • As a wood preservative in special paints, e.g. impregnation of telegraph poles, wooden sandals supporting railway lines.
  • As a skin preservative.
  • As an electrolyte of electrical elements.
  • Due to its easy decomposition into electricity, it is also used in galvanoplasty and electrometallurgy.
  • In pharmacy, as a topical antiseptic, fungicide and bactericidal.
  • In first aid it is provided as an emetic - antidote in some cases of poisoning.
  • In disinfection of wider areas, camps, hospitals, ships, etc.
  • In analytical chemistry as a raw material for the production of other chemical compounds of copper.
