Every time we transplant our plants in a pot or planter, we wonder what soil to use to have better growth and flowering. Let's look at the specifications that the topsoil must have for the basic plant categories in order to choose the right one.

The importance of soil

Soil is a primary factor in both a well-developed garden and a productive vegetable garden, let alone the proper growth of plants in pots and planters! The role of the soil is not only as a means of supporting the plants but much more essential than that. The soil supplies the plants with water and nutrients while at the same time it must ensure the appropriate conditions for the proper development of the root system (drainage, ventilation, etc.). Soil quality is assessed according to its mechanical composition (i.e. its structure and its content of clay, clay and sand), its chemical composition (i.e. its content of nutrients as well as organic matter) and pH. These characteristics are not constant but change over time. As the plants grow, they consume large amounts of nutrients, which are not replenished, while with the movement of irrigation water, the growth of the roots and also with the effect of other factors (such as pressing for example), the structure of the soil also changes. Thus, our primary concern is to choose, depending on the type of plant, the best soil, but also to renew or strengthen it every year!

Topsoil for ornamental plants

Ornamental plants have different needs in soil type, in nutrient needs and in moisture.

  • The acidophilic plants, ie gardenia, hydrangea, camellia, azalea and rhododendrons are special plant soil with low pH (4,5-5).
  • Flowering plants need more nutrients and therefore it is good that the topsoil we use will also contain slow release fertilizer, which will help them in flowering.
  • Indoor plants need specialized topsoil to retain more moisture due to warmer conditions.
  • Aromatic plants need topsoil that has very good drainage and aeration of the root system to avoid rotting the roots. Such topsoils are those that have perlite and pumice in a suitable ratio.
  • The orchid, in order to be able to grow properly, needs a special substrate with peel which can be obtained from agricultural stores.
  • Cacti and succulents need topsoil with very good drainage, ie one that contains enough sand and perlite.

Topsoil for fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are plants that consume large amounts of nutrients during the growing season, as they grow and give their fruit. For this reason their topsoil must be rich in nutrients in order to be able to yield. The best combination is topsoil with black peat in the highest concentration, compost and manure and organic fertilizer.
